A Mad Rush to the End of Innocence

A Mad rush to the end of innocence, is in all truth the journey we are all on in unison. From the awakening and starting pistol of birth, the race to the end of our mortal coil is incumbent upon us. Innocence and youth are both readily disposable commodities. When such traits are cast a sunder the onset of adulthood is sickeningly premature. With adulthood comes responsibility. Adolescence is just a brief acquaintance, and a parting gesture this acquaintance introduces you to your saddle. The world of demand and burden awaits. Your grasp on your fleeting childhood has loosened. The beauty of innocence, The joy of not knowing.beauty, mad rush, innocence, childhood, natureThe ability to observe unchallenged the sheer awe and bewilderment of possibility that lay ahead. It is our right of passage that we should be unfettered by sin or moral judgement. It is an extension of the womb in which protection is preserved allowing us to grow unhindered. So why the mad rush to accelerate growth? In women the incessant need to accelerate growth by means of make up and short skirts. In later life the clinging onto an anti ageing elixir. In men to smoke, drink and be sexually prolific. The latter day man worrying about hair loss, lifestyle related diseases and impotence. Why is there a Mad Rush to get to the very end in the swiftest time possible? Of course in whatever gender there are crossover points and neither circumstance is exclusive. But they are all traits of our accelerated modern lives.

Life in a Mad Rush

So what is the music that has shackled me to memories of my own youth, and by default the 3D reality of the tender youth that usurps my own? A mesmeric piano piece by Phillip Glass called Mad Rush. It is the personification of the pace of life. It rises, it descends. It trickles and flows throw the mind with consummate ease. The magic lies in that it caresses your soul draws memory and circumstance from your subconscious. The irony is before you even realise it, this 15 minute piece is over. Time for reflection has passed. That is the majesty of this music, it gently unwraps and exposes your innocence, it chastens you into a recant of childhood. Then its over!

Mad rush to dispose of innocence

Protect the innocence of childhood. Promote and value it. Whether your a parent or relative, or indeed the child in question. Hold on to your youth for as long as you can. beast of burden, mad rushProtect it as if your life depends on it. It goes so quickly and once passed it is non refundable. There is so much time to grow up. When your a beast of burden, that saddle is fastened tight, its construction has a life time guarantee. So a visit to the saddlery is unfortunately a part of the cycle of life. But don’t be jumping the queue to get there.

Music envelopes us. It prompts rich and vivid memories. It can recount pain, bring joy and every emotion in-between. Try today’s music in seclusion. Play it loud, and it still soft to the touch. What Music holds court over your life. We would love to hear.

Charity versus Abundance is perverse at best!

Charity versus Abundance. That’s the conundrum, yet simplistic premise we will explore here. Abundance by its very dictionary definition is, the situation in which there is more than enough of something: So what is the something? Well Its food, shelter and healthcare. The basics of humanity. But millions of people are dependant on these needs being met by gifts of generosity , not necessity when resources clearly exist That is the strange charity versus abundance dilemma.

There is enough food to feed the world. The world produces 17% more food per person today than 30 years ago. But close to a billion people go to sleep hungry every night. That’s the food aspect conclusively highlighted. So now lets look at shelter. According to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, there is an estimated 100 million homeless people worldwide.charity versus abundance, charity, abundance, hunger, healthcare, wealth, moneyThis is a startling statistic when you consider how affluent some parts of the world are. There is ample food production and ample resources for shelter. So lets close this factual triangle of human needs against clear surplus by adding healthcare into the melting pot. As I write, over 1/3 of the world population does not have access to the medicines essential to their health and survival. A famous quote encompasses this perfectly ‘The world has enough for everyone’s need, but not enough for everyone’s greed’. -Mahatma Gandhi — The music to accompany this blogpost and to support this quote is ‘Every Little thing’ by Peter Doran.

It is therefore clear that our planet is abundant in both food and resources. These resources are as is widely known being aggressively depleted. But as of this moment in time they exist. However in order to disperse these most rudimentary of needs, we need money. So is there an abundance of wealth in the world to facilitate this requirement. Simple answer, Yes! The richest 1% now has as much wealth as the rest of the world combined, according to Oxfam. So by no great calculus, evenly distributed. Whether abundance exists or just adequacy, The wealth is there.

Charity versus Abundance

So lets pass a cursory eye over charity. In its purest form charity is the benevolent goodwill toward or love of humanity. Generosity and helpfulness especially toward the needy or suffering and aid given to those in need. Well there is a plethora of ‘good causes’ that I can recall from memory, more likely a multitude though! But the key and most troubling term in that whole definition is voluntarily. In every crevice and corner of this planet there lies a cause. But why are we dependant on the generosity of a miniscule proportion of mankind so that we can all receive the most basic of care.

So lets drag ourselves back kicking and screaming to the opening exchange. The deeply unequal equation of Charity versus Abundance. I Am either naïve, or just clinging on to the romantic notion, that we all deserve the bare bones of humanitarian care. If abundance outweighs need. Then why does charity even exist. Its an oxymoron of global proportion. It is painfully evident that the battle of charity versus abundance is perversely one sided.

Every little thing you think that you need

So why was the scribing of this post particularly prevalent now, When there is always loss, desolation, depravation and fear existing in every walk of life everyday.charity versus abundance, every little thing, peter doranWell I live on an virtual intravenous drip of music every single day of my existence. Its my lifeforce if you like. I can draw emotion, purpose and understanding in every aspect of my life from it. The music that inspired this post was no epic ‘earth song’, no triumphant ‘feed the world’. Its a little acoustic ditty about what you have is enough, and what you want is not necessarily what you need. Its a beautiful basic song suitably repetitive in verse and chorus, that just pokes the neurons into a deliberative state. ‘Every Little thing’ by Peter Doran. Dwell on the song a while. It applies to most of us.

What music spikes your philosophical musings. Music that taps deep into your psyche, and makes images and memories flash from your sub-conscious to this moment it time. We’d love to know?

Not as patient as an angel!

Having the commodity of patience in abundance, means you can remain calm, In the face of adversity. Even when you’ve been waiting like what feels like forever or dealing with something so painstakingly slow or trying to teach someone how to do something, that they just don’t get. It involves acceptance and tolerance. The ability to be as patient as an angel. Well I’m impatience personified, and it would be tensioning the tendons and ligaments of truth to say I handle this emotion well.

Lets put it in layman’s terms. We all have 24 hours per day. In that we are all equal. However the amount of 24 hour periods is a little more open to hope and inquiry. So time is a wasting. The to musical opposites in question are, and in the blue corner is “I want it all (and I want it now)” by Queen. Freddie Mercury a man that you could argue, lived his life excessively and paid the price. In the red corner Patience of Angels by Eddie Reader. A beautiful lyrically crafted meander through a life of anonymity, repetition and hope. As with everything there is possibly a measured and counter balanced response. On this issue however the fence is to splintery and abrasive on my derriere, that I can only fall on one side.

So I’m a blue corner thinker. how long have I got on this ragged patch of earth? Unanswerable and unknown. patience, virtueHave I got time therefore to waste, dither, procrastinate, pontificate on the circumstances around me. Do I have time to allow the planets to align. Maybe I do, maybe I don’t? But waiting isn’t going to achieve anything. But the more analytical of you. The planners, the prodders and the calculators. Would see no method in this impulsive madness. The horizon can only be seen, when a sturdy platform, on firm footings has been erected to get a pure salient perspective of the horizon and all the beauty it holds. Alternatively bumped, broken, shamed and bruised encounter after encounter (not diminishing all the life experience along the route) you wake up one day, beaten to submission or joyous in a journeys end.

buffering, waiting, patienceThis is not about money, not about status or stature its about your Elysium on earth. The plateau where all your (and yours alone) satisfactions is met. I’m trying to find a balance of the 2 valuable enemies and allies. I would glean far more life credits in thinking that I threw everything and failed, than If I had all the tent poles erected but never the canvas.

So the advocacy here is patience may well be a virtue, It maybe a waste of time? “I was waiting for something extraordinary to happen but as the years wasted on, nothing ever did unless I caused it.” – Charles Bukowski. Impulsive people that are not as patient as an angel. They are just balls out, pigeon hole failure as the way not to do things, and deal with what life hurls at them. I am not so enveloped in wisdom that I have any definitive answer.

But an equation on our lives for the numerically ordered amongst us is one day waiting = one non-refundable day gone. I found this opinion and thought provocation from music. What life lessons have you learnt from music?

New Year’s Let it be Words of Wisdom

Well its that time of year again, Another year gone, another starts. So let’s have some New year’s let it be words of wisdom. Let it be! Get your pencil sharpened, your eraser even readier, and lets start that list of resolutions. Or, lets not! There are hundreds if not thousands of resolution and positivity monkeys out there. Ready and willing to peddle you their wares, their systems their formulas for new year success. But I’m going to attack this subject from a very conciliatory, base camp kind of angle.

Lets start by stating for the record, clearly and concisely that the 31st January (or wherever your denomination chooses to allocate new year.0e660feddc59f6951e23d1fc7bad75f4 Its a con, a roués, A commercial fall frontal attack on the relevance of one day, to generate more income. It matters not a jot. The day you call time on the past and move on to whatever your venture or calling is, is whatever day you want it to be.

So your hopes and aspirations are no the content of this post. The core subject matter is drawing a line from where you are now. Parcelling up what has gone, understanding and accepting that how you revise, repair of even disregard it. It will never be as it was. I’m not for a single second belittling or simplifying the dereliction of your past. But highlighting the basic human need to move forward with purpose, and without energy sapping baggage.

Your past is your past. This post is a considerably heartfelt wrench through my own social history. So rest assured I write from pure experience. Not from re-purposed content. Not from trolling through hectares of self-help dirge.

So given the fact a date has no relevance. Why now! Some would say a bit hypocritical. Some, are more than welcome to their opinion. But as always a song I heard over this period of time brought this outpouring of emotion to light. But that is only one third of the story. Two thirds of this post have its roots in movies, and fictitious ones at that!

The first is Love Actually. The scene is of unrequited impossible love that exists in one but not the other protagonist. Its that moment of release and unburdening of your feelings, that allow you to move on. 6f83cc2d94898871a32cd857b109bea5The context of the scene is One man’s love, for another’s wife. But the salient point is I’ve bared my soul. I can do no more. Its time to move on.

“Enough now. Enough”.

The second is a little known film called ‘Star Wars-The Force Awakens’. Before the scoffing starts. No, I’m not perched over my keyboard dressed as a stormtrooper, neither is my light sabre at hand. Maz_Kanata_VDIn fact it is Sentence or to that is so pinpoint accurate its quite significant and self propelling.

“The belonging you seek is not behind you, it is in front of you”.

You can tinker, reprise, repair or disregard what has gone before. But you CAN’T change it. It is scientifically impossible. So call an end to it. There are probably endless metaphors to encompass this. But this seems pretty apt “mental baggage slows you down”.
So to the Music. The track that hopefully compels you to re-evaluate, re-organise or just plain old brush the ghosts of the past away, allowing you to tread the boards of you own onward stage. “Let it be” “>>by The Beatles. Its anthemic, It’s spiritual, its rousing….in short a true Classic. The two verses that really pull my dampened heart strings are the following:-

latest-happy-new-year-2016-photos

“..and when all the broken hearted people
Living in the world agree
There will be an answer, let it be

For though they may be parted
There is still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be”

There it is. Hope, faith and forward momentum. Please excuse the religious denomination of ‘Mother Mary’. Just replace that with your own inner strength, your person to lean on, or religious icon of your choice. This song is for everyone.

In my opening foray. I did somewhat unfairly deride the anti-procrastination, positivity brigade. But in fairness amongst the charlatans and hawkers there is truth and there is gold in them there hills. You can not achieve anything without effort or determination. So dump the saddle bags of the past and move on.

It may well be new years eve at midnight of any random significant juncture in your life. But as Les Brown, a highly credible self motivator states:-

“Find out what it is you want, and go after it as if your life depends on it. Why? Because it does,”

So have a happy significant year, and lifetime when ever you choose to start. Take it from embittered personal experience. Its not easy. But it is ultimately necessary.

Christmas is such a crappy concept!

Where to begin with Christmas? Is it religious, or some conjugated commercial fraud? They seem to be the extremes and bedrocks of the argument, and counter argument. Which is why Modern Christmas is such a crappy concept! Now if religious text is to be believed, and Jesus Christ our saviour was born. Thus setting the wheels in motion of giving gifts in praise and honour of the lord. maxresdefault (3)_623x715Fair enough! But no proof exists of this, well apart from beliefs, doctrines and stories. But no proof really, just faith. But for all those that buy into the most widely read story of all time (especially in western culture), All power to you. If you truly believe this, then who am I to cast doubt upon your aspersion.

But in fairness lets look at what Christmas really is in modern day culture. A whole mismatch and correlation of dysfunctional families (and friends) that are forced upon each other to celebrate the yule tide by exchanging unwanted and un-needed gifts that waiver in value to the worthiness (in your eyes) of the recipient. Tolerance is the overriding theme of such a joyous occasion, Where we stretch ligaments and tendons to their limits to accommodate the various cornucopia of personality clashes.

Lets break it down shall we, a Christmas tree! Where was that in the scriptures. Well it wasn’t. Not even the most devout’ would lay claim that Jesus himself had any association, allegiance or commercial venture with the cultivation of the Fir tree Industry. Nobody is really sure when Fir trees were first used as Christmas trees. It probably began about 1000 years ago in Northern Europe, and is fairly safe to assume
that it has no direct incantation with the (allegedly) true meaning of Christmas. In the U.S alone Christmas tree sales represent over 1 billion dollars. Far cry from a manger and 3 wise men.

A step further forward, and I’m no vegetarian. But to quote George Orwell’s Animal farm ” all animals are equal, but some are more equal than others”Try telling that to the Turkey. Well obviously conjecture will exist to when and why the Turkey represents Christmas, but a popular theory is that HenryVIII started the tradition. Again not a direct descendant of Jesus Christ. In addition and apart from beheading wives. He Invented A religion to suit his own criteria. So perhaps not overly endowed in (manufactured) Christmas spirit.

This little potted history, brings me neatly to the music that inspired this jovial jibe at the commercial tomfoolery and nonsense that is Christmas Corey Taylor – X-M@$. Yes Corey Taylor of Slipknot fame. Admittedly not someone immediately synonymous with the season of good will. corey taylor xmasBut raises some very pertinent points, that we all financially and emotionally support, that are a fair few million miles away from Bethlehem. Lets take a few. “If I ain’t drunk, then it aint Christmas”. Even if you are complicit in being a little merry or tipsy through alcohol (or other substances) alone, during the festive period. Shame on you….Frankincense, gold and myrrh where the gifts. No presence of a JD & Coke anywhere.

Now this song is a tirade, a rant and unashamedly full of expletives. But there is a point. This is the salient part. Maybe its the sobering part, because Christmas is as intrinsically linked to alcohol and over consumption as it is to Christmas Trees and Turkeys.

A further line of scripture from said song is “I think collectively as a people, should rise against this corporate jolly noise, Lets buy some peace and quiet for a change, before we spend it all on f**king toys”

Christmas is corporate, it is commercial. A church that advertises a service of Midnight Mass is buying into the economic culture. lady_begging_outside_church_by_abadalweb-d2bqiikThere is poverty, Starvation, Torture, Cruelty throughout the world, and lets not forget the plain old sad and lonely during this time. In direct opposition A scalable idea of the retail boom of Christmas gifts, is indicated by 13 Billion pounds by Amazon alone. Now I’m not Bob Geldof. I’m not banging my ‘Feed the world’ drum, or rolling my needy causes bandwagon right through your computer screen. But be honest people. If you want a jolly up through a synthetic period of time known as ‘Christmas’ (even though it bares no resemblance to its own original tenuous routes) then all power to you.

If in contrast you take a solemn religious overview of this time, I absolutely respect your beliefs and religious leanings.

But churches and religions are as morally bereft of social conscience, as are corporate money swelling giants. this-beautiful-random-act-of-kindness-was-photographed-give-this-awesome-guy-a-like-for-caring-600x390So try to abolish from this time in whatever measure you see fit, these 3 words. GREED, GLUTONY & SELFISHNESS. “Have a nice day” & “How are you” are as precious and enveloping as any infantile gesture tainted with ‘Merry Christmas’……and don’t even get me started on ‘Happy New Year”!! What’s so significant about the 31st January, or Jewish new year, or Chinese new year. Its a day, a number gives it no significance whatsoever.

Just be nice, spread some joy and love (with or without) the Christmas prefix, It doesn’t even have to be money orientated!…..Happy end of December everyone!

If you have any comments, please add them below. If you have a favourite song or playlist you wish to share. I will share it with everyone I can. At no cost to you…..My December gift.

Take the easy option, just give up!

So you’ve had enough. To many obstacles, insurmountable barriers. So you procrastinate. So you feel the fear, and do it anyway as in the best selling book. Or Not as the case may be. So the fight is over, you can just take the easy option and just give up. Now isn’t that better? All the stress, toil and effort is redundant. Indifference then enters stage left. I tried, I failed….so what. Then slowly the growth of those feelings of failure rear there considerably ugly head. This is the natural human course. When sufficient time has passed, then the analytical side of your brain seeks closure. How close were you? Were you at the last hurdle and exhausted to the point of finishing line blindness. Well you’ll never now will you?

Wise words indeed. Probably bordering on preachy or self righteous. But this is the exact opposite of what I really believe. Now to the people that really know me, I’m going through some very challenging emotional times and the above example is a road i’ve been taking time and time again, in a headless chicken method of resolving my problems. All this thinking was brought to fruition and cohesion by the song “Don’t give up by Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush”. When the key people in my life stumble across this post, there will be a fair share of scoffing at my expense. I haven’t seen the woods for the trees. Haven’t seen what’s in front of me, and the strength and bond it provides. The are several parts of this song that epitomize
what they say, but the hearing of it becomes diffused due to the emotional ardour.

75d390c845d4829911449a3c9b9f97f1For example:-
Don’t give up
’cause you have friends
Don’t give up
You’re not beaten yet
Don’t give up
I know you can make it good

I’m repeatedly told this, but there are internal barriers that prohibit this faith and strength in the people around me to manifest in myself. There isn’t anything that is easy. You have to earn easy. This is my time in the trenches earning it and this song has helped me to appreciate that. The people closest to me have willingly volunteered themselves to lean on. But due to inept reasoning and childish male pride shun it. So thank you Mr.Gabriel you have truly opened my eyes.

The human spirit is as strong as it is weak. this next verse for me emblazons that we don’t necessarily need things, but we need warmth, we need security. we need hope and belief. Faith if you prefer but for me, not in a religious sense. In that someone loves you, above all else. They see your pain. They cant take that away, but they can swaddle you, and give you the belief to not only overcome, but to hold your hand through the troubled waters unconditionally. This one verse encompasses devastation and hope in one verse.tumblr_maly8ppZUY1rzjvjio1_500

As daylight broke, I saw the earth
The trees had burned down to the ground
Don’t give up
You still have us
Don’t give up
We don’t need much of anything
Don’t give up

So to those who know who they are….. a thank you, for everything. I love you with all my heart. But the message is, although this is a little biopic of my life is listen to this song. DO NOT give up! Whatever turmoil, emotional pain, strain or bereavement. Solace exists in the people around you. You just need to show your weakness and accept the kindness and love of others. Its an embittered world. But your network is out there. You just have to let it take the strain for you occasionally. Its not weakness, its support so do not give up. The clouds will eventually disperse have faith in the people that care for you.

But give the whole song a listen….its lyrical genius. There is something for everyone in there.Do you have a similar story, or a song that denotes a stage or moment in your life… a pinnacle and poignant reminder of good or bad times? If so let us know. Music is a wondrous thing it can evoke a whole plethora of human emotion and we’d love to know yours.

Car Crash on the Desert Island

Try Market Samurai For Free!
Lee Jacobs will never be on Desert Island Discs! But his life is stunning in its lack of intensity or direction. His is a short story, of a short life so far. Everybody has a story, and his is amusing in a very black comedic way. Not a rags to riches story by any means. But certainly a story to be read as a cautionary tale.. A car crash on the desert island. So who is Lee Jacobs? Well this is his short bio, and 5 (I will never be on Desert Island discs) song choices.

Well, welcome to the tedium of my life to date. This is not to say that things won’t change. Its not to say I don’t have dreams and aspirations. But to date, my life at the age 30 is a bit of a car crash! Both personally and financially. I hold absolutely nobody responsible for these events other than myself. I am fully accountable for the many failures so far. So here goes:- Average family, average schooling. Passed some exams, failed others due to my sheer indifference to schooling. At 17 I became an apprentice bookkeeper. 2 weeks in ‘shoot me please’. So perhaps clerical wasn’t for me. Took up a carpentry apprenticeship. Numerous injuries and total inability for any precision led me to believe perhaps a craftsman’s trade wasn’t for me either. Now getting older apprenticeships weren’t an option. Bar work was the way forward. From bar to bar each for small increments in hourly rate. A Turkey packing factory, fruit picking, Early morning office cleaning, all further low lights. Building site labouring, 6 weeks of back breaking pain. Several commission only sales jobs (where I received little or no training). Also had stints at fast food outlets and shelf stacking at supermarkets. In between all this spent all I earned, had some wild times along the way. But to date that’s me.

….and My 5 favourite tracks are:-

House of Jealous Lovers by The Rapture Dance Music and Punk all rolled into one. Just one of those songs that in a period of time. You hear it everywhere, and in my mostly alcohol induced state of the time, always made me get up and dance (of sorts!)festivalx

Evil by Interpol I first see this song on video, and remembered it because it was so creepy. Bizarre song that I still don’t fully understand. But meanders along then explodes into life.

Pure Shores by All Saints From one of my favourite films ‘The Beach’ Super Sultry!

Run by Snow Patrol The most mind blowing anthem live. Festival Music at its absolute best. Chills, real hairs on the back of the neck stuff. Belted it out to the point of exhaustion.

Mad World By Gary Jules Notable in my mind as the most depressing Christmas song ever. Dressed up as poignant, and thought provoking. I just thought it was dull to the point of life ending.

Well that’s Lee’s choices. Please comment below. Better still comment below and tell me your short bio and 5 music choices. I will happily publish them. If you love Music. Show the love here!

A leap of faith onto the Island

Mark Constantine will never be on Desert Island Discs! But he has definitely made a leap of faith onto the island. His is not so much his life story, but a crucial excerpt in his life. Its his Game changer moment. Not a rags to riches story by any means. But certainly a despair to joy story. So who is Mark Constantine Sykes? Well this is his short bio, and 5 (I will never be on Desert Island discs) song choices.

I always had a passion for food. From day one in school Food technology was the go to lesson. Worked in some of the finest London restaurants from dishwasher to waiter, to a minion chef. That’s where my career stalled. Ridiculously long unsociable hours, and progression or elite career path was a goal. But a distant one. Then one day the fire went out. On my passion. Due to hours and laboriously repetitive menus and preparation tasks. I woke up one morning, and just didn’t go to work. MCONSI took inventory of all my possessions, my home (flat) included. Then sold the lot. Lock, stock and barrel. I was always told, never put all your eggs in one basket. But I like eggs. So one monster leap of faith. Purchased a modest little home outright in the Philippines. Took a while to integrate and be accepted by the locals….and now. I cook street food. Hours at my discretion doing something I absolutely love, in a beautiful climate and life at my pace. I’m not rich in money (you don’t need to be here), but I’m rich in life. Five years so far, and no end in sight yet (thankfully).

My 5 favourite tracks are:-

God and Satan by Biffy Clyro A song I love that is a little reminiscent of my life really. Ups, downs… Two sides to every story and the fact there are no miracles or right answers in life, just where your peace is.

Use Somebody by Kings of Leon The song of my lost love. I sacrificed her for my career. A vivid memory of song we both danced. They say you shouldn’t have regrets. That’s one!

Dangerous by Conroy Smith Just remember this from a boxing match involving Nigel “The Dark Destroyer” Benn. It was his walk in music. Had a copy of it ever since…Proper attitude Music!

Drink to much by UFO Now this song sums up the whole restaurant/catering industry. Long hours, Hardly worth going to bed sometimes. So Just find one of the many haunts in London and party till the next shift.

Pagbabago by Kandangyan Just some music from my adopted home. A Filipino tribal band meets Rock. Have seen them live. A bit of an acquired taste, But when in Rome.

Well that’s Mark choices. Please comment below. Better still comment below and tell me your short bio and 5 music choices. I will happily publish them. If you love Music. Show the love here!
