Your Egyptian Chains are on!

Do you feel currently, or have felt in the past your chains are on. What do I mean by chains? Well restrictions, inhibitors. Life obstacles that prevent you living the life you may idealise. You may feel your work/career chains are on. Maybe there is emotional or mental chains that imprison your dreams, aspirations and goals. This is not a modern problem as history and this landmark song illustrates.

Dio’s Chains are on

This week, a real blast from the past. Some good old unapologetic 80’s rock. Music of pedigree though.dio, chains, chains are onThe sadly recently deceased Ronnie James Dio (formerly of Black Sabbath and Rainbow) with his self named band, created a little masterpiece that is as relevant now, as it was then. Listen here.
Egypt(the chains are on). The lyrics recount the tale of ancient Egypt, and the woes of slavery and service of the masses.

The broad story board is, that in the land of pharaohs and queens all but the divine beings are subjects, numbers, fodder if you prefer. Bound to a life of endless servitude. There chains are on!

Signs your chains are on

As I pick through the learnings, yes learnings of a thumping rock song, can you draw parallels to each of the earmarked lyrics in your existence.

“In the land of the lost horizon”. Have you ever found yourself contemplating your life. Not now but when you were all dreamy and aspirational. When the world was your oyster. Then places you visit, the career to finance your dreams. Now if you have not ticked though life boxes or at least only few. Then you realise your ritualised hamster wheel life is doing little if nothing to rekindle that youthful enthusiasm. Then yours is the land of the lost horizon.

“In the land of no tomorrows where you pray to just to end each day. chains, chains are on, dio, egyptWhere your life just slowly melts away”. So the emotion of inevitability, of routine, of just another soul crushing day. Well that is your land of no tomorrows. Because today is tomorrow and transversely tomorrow is today. That descending feeling is your life melting away.

“Maybe one day you’ll be like me free. still your chains are on”. This is the hope in your soul. Of course hope is folly without substance, without action or endeavour. Your chains are on if your life is dictated by maybes. The goal is your freedom. Your obstacles in achieving that status are your chains and your routine.

Finally “They had rainbows in there eyes”. I believe there is always a way. A non-predetermined path for us all. The art of war is to strive to find it. I find it hard to comprehend that whatever your goal. It has been in some variant achieved before. Not only achieved but catalogued by means of a book, course or various and increasing different media streams. Step by step. Ready to be replicated, twisted and formed to your own needs. The rainbows in your eyes are your goals. You may have lost sight of, or lost focus on them. But live them in every bright and vibrant spectrum your life deserves. Because your fulfilled life depends on them.

This song is a portrayal of a life typified by slavery. It may now be transposed and seen as drudgery and monotony. But in either case it is slavery of the mind, body and spirit. So what are your ‘Rainbows in your eyes’songs? Let us know here.

Not as patient as an angel!

Having the commodity of patience in abundance, means you can remain calm, In the face of adversity. Even when you’ve been waiting like what feels like forever or dealing with something so painstakingly slow or trying to teach someone how to do something, that they just don’t get. It involves acceptance and tolerance. The ability to be as patient as an angel. Well I’m impatience personified, and it would be tensioning the tendons and ligaments of truth to say I handle this emotion well.

Lets put it in layman’s terms. We all have 24 hours per day. In that we are all equal. However the amount of 24 hour periods is a little more open to hope and inquiry. So time is a wasting. The to musical opposites in question are, and in the blue corner is “I want it all (and I want it now)” by Queen. Freddie Mercury a man that you could argue, lived his life excessively and paid the price. In the red corner Patience of Angels by Eddie Reader. A beautiful lyrically crafted meander through a life of anonymity, repetition and hope. As with everything there is possibly a measured and counter balanced response. On this issue however the fence is to splintery and abrasive on my derriere, that I can only fall on one side.

So I’m a blue corner thinker. how long have I got on this ragged patch of earth? Unanswerable and unknown. patience, virtueHave I got time therefore to waste, dither, procrastinate, pontificate on the circumstances around me. Do I have time to allow the planets to align. Maybe I do, maybe I don’t? But waiting isn’t going to achieve anything. But the more analytical of you. The planners, the prodders and the calculators. Would see no method in this impulsive madness. The horizon can only be seen, when a sturdy platform, on firm footings has been erected to get a pure salient perspective of the horizon and all the beauty it holds. Alternatively bumped, broken, shamed and bruised encounter after encounter (not diminishing all the life experience along the route) you wake up one day, beaten to submission or joyous in a journeys end.

buffering, waiting, patienceThis is not about money, not about status or stature its about your Elysium on earth. The plateau where all your (and yours alone) satisfactions is met. I’m trying to find a balance of the 2 valuable enemies and allies. I would glean far more life credits in thinking that I threw everything and failed, than If I had all the tent poles erected but never the canvas.

So the advocacy here is patience may well be a virtue, It maybe a waste of time? “I was waiting for something extraordinary to happen but as the years wasted on, nothing ever did unless I caused it.” – Charles Bukowski. Impulsive people that are not as patient as an angel. They are just balls out, pigeon hole failure as the way not to do things, and deal with what life hurls at them. I am not so enveloped in wisdom that I have any definitive answer.

But an equation on our lives for the numerically ordered amongst us is one day waiting = one non-refundable day gone. I found this opinion and thought provocation from music. What life lessons have you learnt from music?

I will never be on Desert Island Discs

IMG_0633Well the bad news there is an incredibly high possibility you will never be on desert island discs.
It was first broadcast on 29 January 1942. More than 3,000 episodes have been recorded, with some guests having appeared more than once. So here is the math… That 73 years!!! Yep 73 years….wow! So averaging it out that’s just over 40 episodes per year. There are an estimated 7.2 billion people on earth at the moment. So your chances of appearing or being invited to tell your life story by music to the whole world is frankly non-existent! Sorry! That’s not to say your story isn’t interesting, appealing, courageous or even charmingly average. I have sat and listened to some awful dirge on desert island discs. Some relentlessly dour people that have the appeal of somebody putting a halibut unable your car seat and letting it fester. It has been done, and I’ve been the unwitting recipient. Not pleasant, is a very sober way of described it! I digress…..So what gives someone the prestige or aura of being worthy a desert island discs invites. Well basically an award or two, a celebrity status….and we are not always talking ‘a’ list. Written a well acclaimed or sold book, a songwriter or performer. Now all very noble and worthy people and I’m not attempted to diminish anybody’s achievements or indeed life story…..but!

Everybody has a story, Everybody! I would happily go out on a limb and say your story is more engrossing and real life than a vast majority on desert island disc guests. Some of the guests are so obscure in popular culture, they literally maybe the man or woman in the street. Yep, we are going grass roots up! From low achievers (in status, not in life experience), middle achievers and every scope and scale in-between and beyond. desert_island_discs_alt_2_-_largeBecause I believe you have a story, just the same, as every prevalent celebrity. There are an whole cornucopia of band leaders that have made the cut, but so many band members that haven’t that will have lived that whole dream with an entirely different perspective. So in a band but not the noted and worthy. Come along let’s hear your story. Book researchers (and the writers)…Bus drivers, fruit pickers, school leavers, university students, businessmen and every gap and crevice in-between.

I intrigued how music effects us all. There is an immense amount of science that supports and links music to our physical and mental well being. Music is used as medicine in many age related degenerating illnesses. It is essential in us growing up. It is part of the whole creative processes in our mind whether you are aware of it or not. Music releases dopamine in our bodies. In laymans terms its are naturally occuring happy juice.

It is my total consuming belief that the makers of music are mad scientists and geniuses. They create sounds, rhythm and lyrics that we sub consciously (and consciously) link to moments in our life. We can hear these again at random intervals in our life…..some times years in advance and completely out of the blue. All we need is one bar, one riff one note. We instantly recall the song, the beat, the lyrics. Then the pure neurological miracle that the memory kicks in and that songs monuments a particular moment in our lives. Vivid colors, characters and textures of a time, a place and a moment with all the relevant people in place in time. Music evokes and creates memories.

So don’t be afraid to put your name in the ring. There is not even a formal application process. Choose 5 pieces of music from your life, we can elaborate on the details later, assign those questions to a song and voila, we schedule it for a date and a time. The big carrot is, if your story is rich in emotion and landscape it will be promoted to the up and coming podcast. That’s me and you on the world wide web. Our 15 minutes of fame, as Andy Warhol would say!

Want a flavor of what I’m after? Then give desert island discs a listen to. Kirsty’s lovely, and its an epic piece of radio, I am a mahoosive fan. But it just doesn’t get amongst the people. That’s exactly what I want.

Here is the link to my page…….. My “I will never be on desert island discs” page…. Just for some ideas!

There are some requirements or T’s and C’s to your story being published. They are here and they are not prohibitive or complex, just a bit of vanity and self promotion so we can get your story out there to as many people as we can. Let’s get started….

Music outlook therapy

music perception, music, mood

Music Outlook Therapy, is a term I use to shorten the premise that music can change your entire perception on life. Is there something in life, present or past that saddens you. Blackens your outlook on life. It doesn’t have to even be present in front of you.  It can make you feel down for the days, days turn into weeks, weeks turn  into months to come, especially if you let it grind into you, with no respite or intervention. But if you want to stick a firebreak into the surrounding flames and to enjoy a more positive view in life, then what you need to embrace music. In this day and age its instant restorative process is by your side. Use it! Numerous studies show that people enjoy a ‘happier’ perceptive on life when they listen to resonating music. Do you doubt me listen to “Händel Messiah – Hallelujah Chorus”. Full blast. Eliminate any religious connotation and feel your spirit sore!  So if you want to crush the rebellion of depression away, crank up the device and expect your perception to be changed for the better, and for the good.

Music and perception

Music and mood are closely interlinked. In very basic terms listening to a sad or happy song, can make you feel more sad or happy. Such swings in mood not only affect how you feel, they also change your perception. For example, people will see positivity and energy if they are feeling positive and energetic themselves. Music has tremendous advantages in instantly having a dramatic effect on perception. Even if there is nothing to see, people sometimes still see energy and positivity when they are listening to positive energetic music and vice versa lethargy and sadness when they are listening to dark self indulgent music. Music turns out to have a great influence on what you see. sonos, music perception, musicpsycheConscious perception is largely based on systematic processes. Your brain continuously compares and calculates the information that comes in through your eyes with what it anticipates on the basis of what you know about the world. Basically, visual experience is reality. However when you change your mood or perception with music, your brain builds up expectations of reality, not just on the basis of experience but on your mood as well.’
