Change your Brain Chemistry Happily and Naturally?

The answer to balancing your brain chemistry is the matter for catalogues upon reams of data and research. Why so much information? Because Brain Chemistry and its links to depression, and subsequently artificially creating a re-balance and reordering of neural transmissions are a matter for innumerate debate, opinion and pharmaceutical intervention.brain chemistry, happiness, relaxation Of course a blog post wont even scratch or blemish the surface of this subject. But the point I’m trying to illustrate here is that happiness and its polar opposite depression, have a direct and impacting effect on your life. Direct and impacting actually barely serves justice for the overwhelming importance of balanced, positive and happy brain chemistry.

Abundant Brain Chemistry

It is generally accepted that depression is the scourge of modern civilisation. It is generally believed and accepted that our brave new world is the harvester of the gloom and impending doom, that affects us all at some juncture in our lives. In Tribal communities in what we would presume as deprived or third world conditions in modern society, experience ridiculously low levels of stress, which are comparable to cultures and descendencies before rain forests of data where collated. In these circumstances of low levels of stress and depression, No synthetic interventions were available but brain chemistry was both balanced and abundant.

So we are the victims of our own evolution. This in itself is an entire encyclopaedia of discussion, even volumes. But lets just settle on the fact, that we have created this reality.brain chemistry, headphones, happiness, depression But if we revert and take historical leaves out of our ancestors books lets see if there is a non synthetic therapy for happiness, be it standalone or in a supportive role. Well there is!
It exists, Its alive and well and has in one form or another been with us since day dot. It not in tablet form, not oral suspension. No prescription is needed and its accessible to us all. Even if you are a tribal community, blissfully living grid free, you can manufacture your own medicine. Yes! you can re-wire your brain chemistry…..starting NOW! With Music. Yes that’s correct. MUSIC! I can almost sense the doubt and derision.

Test your Brain chemistry

But try this experiment. It will take approximately take ten minutes of your day. The benefit of this time investment can be euphoric, settling, joyous or just an altered state of brain chemistry that will adjust your perspective on the world. In an enhanced form, and as formulated and specific therapy. Lives can be changed! We can ALL benefit from this experiment and I both challenge and urge you to JUST TRY! The following 5 pieces of music I hope will create a broad spectrum to cater for a vast array of musical tastes. Hopefully one will trigger the necessary reaction.

1. Step out – Jose Gonzalez. A real feel ‘mother nature’ all around anthem. 2. Im Alive – Michael Franti and Spearhead. A happy joyous ‘Life is great’ whistler of a tune.brainwaves, brain chemistry, 3. Sweet Harmony – The Beloved. A reflective, soft harmony of love and mindfulness. 4. Anybody There – Rainbow A moody, atmospheric soul searcher from the rock/metal genre. Finally some rousing choral pomp on a classical theme 5. Anvil chorus – Guiseppe Verdi

What is of great importance and to maintain focus and lose yourself in the mental conjuring of your brain chemistry. Is to seek some solace. Be it by way of headphones, or a space where you can reflect and express the emotions and feelings that spill over during the process. If time permits, if a piece suits your neural mechanisms, repeat the process to reinforce your feelings. Beyond your consciousness the emotions evoked will embed themselves in your neural network and your brain chemistry has begun to change. By the conclusion of the process you will have a slightly altered awareness and change of perception. If you want to take the experience to the next level click here and subscribe.Alternatively leave your experiences, opinions or suggestions below. Happy Testing!

New Year’s Let it be Words of Wisdom

Well its that time of year again, Another year gone, another starts. So let’s have some New year’s let it be words of wisdom. Let it be! Get your pencil sharpened, your eraser even readier, and lets start that list of resolutions. Or, lets not! There are hundreds if not thousands of resolution and positivity monkeys out there. Ready and willing to peddle you their wares, their systems their formulas for new year success. But I’m going to attack this subject from a very conciliatory, base camp kind of angle.

Lets start by stating for the record, clearly and concisely that the 31st January (or wherever your denomination chooses to allocate new year.0e660feddc59f6951e23d1fc7bad75f4 Its a con, a roués, A commercial fall frontal attack on the relevance of one day, to generate more income. It matters not a jot. The day you call time on the past and move on to whatever your venture or calling is, is whatever day you want it to be.

So your hopes and aspirations are no the content of this post. The core subject matter is drawing a line from where you are now. Parcelling up what has gone, understanding and accepting that how you revise, repair of even disregard it. It will never be as it was. I’m not for a single second belittling or simplifying the dereliction of your past. But highlighting the basic human need to move forward with purpose, and without energy sapping baggage.

Your past is your past. This post is a considerably heartfelt wrench through my own social history. So rest assured I write from pure experience. Not from re-purposed content. Not from trolling through hectares of self-help dirge.

So given the fact a date has no relevance. Why now! Some would say a bit hypocritical. Some, are more than welcome to their opinion. But as always a song I heard over this period of time brought this outpouring of emotion to light. But that is only one third of the story. Two thirds of this post have its roots in movies, and fictitious ones at that!

The first is Love Actually. The scene is of unrequited impossible love that exists in one but not the other protagonist. Its that moment of release and unburdening of your feelings, that allow you to move on. 6f83cc2d94898871a32cd857b109bea5The context of the scene is One man’s love, for another’s wife. But the salient point is I’ve bared my soul. I can do no more. Its time to move on.

“Enough now. Enough”.

The second is a little known film called ‘Star Wars-The Force Awakens’. Before the scoffing starts. No, I’m not perched over my keyboard dressed as a stormtrooper, neither is my light sabre at hand. Maz_Kanata_VDIn fact it is Sentence or to that is so pinpoint accurate its quite significant and self propelling.

“The belonging you seek is not behind you, it is in front of you”.

You can tinker, reprise, repair or disregard what has gone before. But you CAN’T change it. It is scientifically impossible. So call an end to it. There are probably endless metaphors to encompass this. But this seems pretty apt “mental baggage slows you down”.
So to the Music. The track that hopefully compels you to re-evaluate, re-organise or just plain old brush the ghosts of the past away, allowing you to tread the boards of you own onward stage. “Let it be” “>>by The Beatles. Its anthemic, It’s spiritual, its rousing….in short a true Classic. The two verses that really pull my dampened heart strings are the following:-

latest-happy-new-year-2016-photos

“..and when all the broken hearted people
Living in the world agree
There will be an answer, let it be

For though they may be parted
There is still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be”

There it is. Hope, faith and forward momentum. Please excuse the religious denomination of ‘Mother Mary’. Just replace that with your own inner strength, your person to lean on, or religious icon of your choice. This song is for everyone.

In my opening foray. I did somewhat unfairly deride the anti-procrastination, positivity brigade. But in fairness amongst the charlatans and hawkers there is truth and there is gold in them there hills. You can not achieve anything without effort or determination. So dump the saddle bags of the past and move on.

It may well be new years eve at midnight of any random significant juncture in your life. But as Les Brown, a highly credible self motivator states:-

“Find out what it is you want, and go after it as if your life depends on it. Why? Because it does,”

So have a happy significant year, and lifetime when ever you choose to start. Take it from embittered personal experience. Its not easy. But it is ultimately necessary.

Scare away the dark

I love Music, in case you haven’t guessed! I listen, I envelope in myself in the whole auditorium of sound. I stand by my statement that musicians, songwriters and composers are scientific geniuses. They can manipulate emotion and states of mind. You can have an entire mood or neural dimension re-routed by one piece of music. My playlist would be reminiscent of a never-ending unravelling scroll. I love words. I love literature. My love is amplified when words are put to music, Or when music transcends words. Occasionally I come across Music that dead stops me in my tracks. This afternoon being one such occasion. A track by Passenger entitled “scare away the dark” Everyone has a life of light and shade. Unfortunately in modern life ‘shade’ is a predominant force. Us mere mortals are delicate souls, whether you choose to accept or deny that within your own psyche. But you can climb or fall. That’s the only choice we all have in reality. That’s why this song struck such an emotional chord with me. I’ve added the lyrics below, even read on there own with your own poetic licence, they should evoke a reassuring punch of resilience. For us all there are better times ahead. The destination is unmeasurable. But if you open your eyes, cast aside your darkness and broach the possible outcome, then giving this a little listen will reinforce your spirit. I assure you.

Scare away the Dark – Passenger

Well, sing, sing at the top of your voice,
Love without fear in your heart.
Feel, feel like you still have a choice

If we all light up we can scare away the dark
We wish our weekdays away
Spend our weekends in bed
Drink ourselves stupid
And work ourselves dead
And all just because that’s what mom and dad said we should do

maxresdefaultWe should run through the forest
We should swim in the streams
We should laugh, we should cry,
We should love, we should dream
We should stare at the stars and not just the screens
You should hear what I’m saying and know what it means

To sing, sing at the top of your voice,
Love without fear in your heart.
Feel, feel like you still have a choice
If we all light up we can scare away the dark

Well, we wish we were happier, thinner and fitter,
We wish we weren’t losers and liars and quitters
We want something more not just nasty and bitter
We want something real not just hash tags and Twitter

It’s the meaning of life and it’s streamed live on YouTube
But I bet Gangnam Style will still get more views
We’re scared of drowning, flying and shooters
But we’re all slowly dying in front of fucking computers

So sing, sing at the top of your voice,
Oh, love without fear in your heart.
Can you feel, feel like you still have a choice
If we all light up we can scare away the dark

The video is basically saying there is more a 9-5 mundane, repetitive job. But I’m sure the commercial appeal has sanitised this video. The lyrics and thoughts that lie beneath the veil of the video are truly inspirational. There is light. There is life. We just all have to find where it is. If you ever lose your way and are becoming dispirited. Use this song. Reinforce the positive pathways in your mind. If your interested in the technicalities of how music can change your world you can read more here.

Desert Island discs scuba style

Tommy Sykes will never be on Desert Island Discs! Today it is desert island discs scuba style. So who is Tommy Sykes? Well this is his short bio, and 5 (I will never be on Desert Island discs) song choices.

I grew up a bit of a troubled soul. Was always bending if not breaking the rules. Not much of a traditional education (due to rarely attending school). Moved out of the family home as soon as I was earning a wage and from then lived in numerous shared houses with a wide array of all societies’ waifs and strays. But all in all a very socially dynamic time. Went to Australia when I turned 20, for no particular reason at all and spent numerous nights in some deluxe roofless accommodations. Discovered a passion for the water.louise-photo Scrimped and saved from job to job. Took my scuba instructors course. I now do and teach a job I absolutely love. Not wealthy, but I rise with the sun every day, and the Blue World is my paradise. The motto of my story is you don’t need a formal education to have a great life

Here are my choices:-

1. This Blue World –Elbow Only recently became aware of this. When im not under the water, shut my eyes listen to this and instantly feel at peace with the world.
2. Theme from Jaws- John Williams Ever since I first see this film and heard the iconic theme, was fascinated by this amazing creature to the point of being up close and personal.
3. Down Under – Men at Work: My adopted home, and nothing says Australian culture than this. Still as funny as the first time I heard it.
4. Fourth Rendezvous – Jean Michelle Jarre: An absolute genius. Complete mind transitional music.
5. Thunderstruck – ACDC: Not because they are Australian, just excellent fist pumping rock n’roll. Totally mind blowing live.

Well that’s Tommy’s choices. Please comment below. Better still comment below and tell me your short bio and 5 music choices. I will happily publish them. If you love Music. Show the love here!

Tanya Garner will never be on Desert Island Discs!

Tanya Garner will never be on Desert Island Discs! So who is Tanya Garner? Well her short bio, and 5 ‘I will never be on desert Island discs’ choices are below. What are yours?

Hi, I’m Tanya Garner. I was born into a loud, wild and raucous family, My parents were very socially active, with a wide group of friends that I see so frequently, it felt that they almost lived with us. Don’t remember any standardized mealtimes or bedtimes and even though they are still a little radical and off the wall, they managed to mould me into a pretty cool balanced woman. images63MNJ661I grew up with 2 brothers and a sister and although my parents never seemed to do the same job for any prolonged period, they worked hard to provide for us. I was into everything! Loved school and being around people as well as all the extracurricular stuff such as sports, music as well as dabbling in most religions at some point or another. I had tons of friends growing up and socializing took precedence over education. However, I managed to graduate with some above average exam results, and set off to university where I earned a degree in fine art. After university I immediately bypassed 9-5 and went solo travelling worldwide. Having to be self-sufficient taught me the importance of being independent, throughout my life. As an adult, I work on freelance art and design contracts. I am the direct opposite of a materialist. I earn, I play and repeat. Growing up with a free thinking family instilled the wild, fun and carefree characteristics in me, and I make sure to have fun each and every day. So I guess I am very much a product of my parent’s upbringing, and I love them for that.

Here are my choices:-

1. Kiss, Kiss by Tarkan: Heard this virtually on loop when travelling in Turkey, don’t know if this is the original or not, but this was the sound of that Turkish summer and can just remember dancing insanely to it.

2. Love Shack by The B52’s: Basically this is the house I was brought up in always a party, always singing and dancing, and this song sums it up.

3. Sailing by Rod Stewart: Spent a lot of my life travelling especially on the water. For me this song cries freedom.

4. Air by Johan Sebastian Strauss: University and the arts obviously is something that has stayed with me. This symbolizes just joy and peace,

5. The Escapist by The Streets: Ok, there is a theme here. But for me this is travel and the delicate precious nature of life.

Well that’s Tanya’s choices. Please comment below. Better still comment below and tell me your short bio and 5 music choices. I will happily publish them. If you love Music. Show the love here!

I will never be on Desert Island Discs

IMG_0633Well the bad news there is an incredibly high possibility you will never be on desert island discs.
It was first broadcast on 29 January 1942. More than 3,000 episodes have been recorded, with some guests having appeared more than once. So here is the math… That 73 years!!! Yep 73 years….wow! So averaging it out that’s just over 40 episodes per year. There are an estimated 7.2 billion people on earth at the moment. So your chances of appearing or being invited to tell your life story by music to the whole world is frankly non-existent! Sorry! That’s not to say your story isn’t interesting, appealing, courageous or even charmingly average. I have sat and listened to some awful dirge on desert island discs. Some relentlessly dour people that have the appeal of somebody putting a halibut unable your car seat and letting it fester. It has been done, and I’ve been the unwitting recipient. Not pleasant, is a very sober way of described it! I digress…..So what gives someone the prestige or aura of being worthy a desert island discs invites. Well basically an award or two, a celebrity status….and we are not always talking ‘a’ list. Written a well acclaimed or sold book, a songwriter or performer. Now all very noble and worthy people and I’m not attempted to diminish anybody’s achievements or indeed life story…..but!

Everybody has a story, Everybody! I would happily go out on a limb and say your story is more engrossing and real life than a vast majority on desert island disc guests. Some of the guests are so obscure in popular culture, they literally maybe the man or woman in the street. Yep, we are going grass roots up! From low achievers (in status, not in life experience), middle achievers and every scope and scale in-between and beyond. desert_island_discs_alt_2_-_largeBecause I believe you have a story, just the same, as every prevalent celebrity. There are an whole cornucopia of band leaders that have made the cut, but so many band members that haven’t that will have lived that whole dream with an entirely different perspective. So in a band but not the noted and worthy. Come along let’s hear your story. Book researchers (and the writers)…Bus drivers, fruit pickers, school leavers, university students, businessmen and every gap and crevice in-between.

I intrigued how music effects us all. There is an immense amount of science that supports and links music to our physical and mental well being. Music is used as medicine in many age related degenerating illnesses. It is essential in us growing up. It is part of the whole creative processes in our mind whether you are aware of it or not. Music releases dopamine in our bodies. In laymans terms its are naturally occuring happy juice.

It is my total consuming belief that the makers of music are mad scientists and geniuses. They create sounds, rhythm and lyrics that we sub consciously (and consciously) link to moments in our life. We can hear these again at random intervals in our life…..some times years in advance and completely out of the blue. All we need is one bar, one riff one note. We instantly recall the song, the beat, the lyrics. Then the pure neurological miracle that the memory kicks in and that songs monuments a particular moment in our lives. Vivid colors, characters and textures of a time, a place and a moment with all the relevant people in place in time. Music evokes and creates memories.

So don’t be afraid to put your name in the ring. There is not even a formal application process. Choose 5 pieces of music from your life, we can elaborate on the details later, assign those questions to a song and voila, we schedule it for a date and a time. The big carrot is, if your story is rich in emotion and landscape it will be promoted to the up and coming podcast. That’s me and you on the world wide web. Our 15 minutes of fame, as Andy Warhol would say!

Want a flavor of what I’m after? Then give desert island discs a listen to. Kirsty’s lovely, and its an epic piece of radio, I am a mahoosive fan. But it just doesn’t get amongst the people. That’s exactly what I want.

Here is the link to my page…….. My “I will never be on desert island discs” page…. Just for some ideas!

There are some requirements or T’s and C’s to your story being published. They are here and they are not prohibitive or complex, just a bit of vanity and self promotion so we can get your story out there to as many people as we can. Let’s get started….

Create Super Music Brainpower

Recent research on music and the brain shows that you can create super music brainpower. That is, if you listen to the right type of music, structured correctly can create a positive musical environment. With all this in place you can manufacture brain activity on tap.

What is the connection between music and the brain? Is it possible that music can help you think better? The research says yes, and after telling you about some of it, I’ll let you in on an even faster way to boost your brain power with music.

Music And The Brain – The Research

The research shows that music actually trains the brain for higher forms of thinking. Listening to, and participating in music also creates new neural pathways in your brain that stimulate creativity. An article in a Newsweek reported on a study from the University of California.

In the study, researchers followed the progress of three-year-olds, split into two groups. The first group had no particular training in, or exposure to music. The second group studied piano and sang daily in chorus. After eight months the musical three-year-olds were much better at solving puzzles, and when tested, scored 80% higher in spatial intelligence than the non-musical group.

Brain Music

A study on music and the brain, done at UC Irvine’s Centre for Neurobiology of Learning and Memory involved 36 students. They were given three spatial reasoning tests on a standard IQ test.

Just before the first test, they listened to Mozart’s sonata for Two Pianos in D Major, K. 448 for ten minutes.

Before the second test, they listened to a relaxation tape.

Before the third, they sat in silence.

The average scores for all 36 students: 1st test: 119. 2nd test: 111. 3rd test: 110.

That’s an average increase of 9 i.q points from listening to Mozart. It’s assumed that their intelligence didn’t increase, but that the music put them in a state that gave them better access to the resources of their brains. However, other studies do show that repeated exposure to slow music can permanently increase you IQ, so play that Mozart!

Brain Wave Entrainment

Your brain wave frequencies vary according to the state you are in. For example, daydreaming and meditation usually take place in the “Alpha” range of frequencies. Alert concentration is in the “Beta” range. “Brain wave entrainment” products have beats, usually embedded in music, that your brain starts to follow. This is how brainpower is nurtured.

mozartIf you listen to music containing beats at a frequency of 10 Hz (in the Alpha range) it will feel very relaxing. This is because your brain will begin to follow this frequency and reproduce the rhythm in the music. You’ll generate more brain waves at a 10 Hz frequency and enter a relaxed Alpha mental state. This is the idea behind brain wave entrainment.

This may be why some types of music have certain effects, but not all brain wave entrainment Cds use music. Some use the raw “binaural beats” as they are sometimes called, embedded in white noise, or in sounds of nature. (I have used these products and find them to be pretty powerful , especially the ones for relaxation.)

Whether you use “binaural beats,” or just pop a Mozart CD into the player, you can increase your brain power easily. Try it today. It is doubtful that Mozart will harm you, so why wait for more research to be done on music and the brain?
